As the nation celebrates the 128th Philippine Independence Day, SM Supermalls and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) continue their long-standing partnership to bring meaningful employment opportunities closer to Filipinos.

This June 12, SM and DOLE will simultaneously mount Araw ng Kalayaan Job Fairs across 20 SM malls nationwide, bringing together employers, government agencies, and thousands of jobseekers in one of the country's largest coordinated Independence Day hiring initiatives.

For decades, SM and DOLE have worked hand in hand to make jobs more accessible to communities nationwide. The strength of this partnership was evident during the Labor Day Job Fairs last May 1, when DOLE organized simultaneous job fairs in 15 SM venues, supporting more than 17,000 jobseekers and resulting in over 1,000 hired-on-the-spot (HOTS).

The momentum continues in 2026. From January to May alone, the SM-DOLE partnership has already mounted 66 job fairs, served more than 57,000 jobseekers, which led to over 6,000 hired-on-the-spot, helping thousands of Filipinos take meaningful steps toward employment.

Jobs Today, Skills for Tomorrow

Beyond hiring, this year's Araw ng Kalayaan Job Fairs will also feature upskilling opportunities in partnership with DICT, TESDA, Jobstreet, and industry partners. Job seekers can explore learning opportunities in AI, cybersecurity, digital marketing, data analytics, virtual assistance, and other in-demand skills designed to improve employability and prepare them for the future of work.

Real Opportunities. Real Stories. Behind every successful job fair are stories of hope and transformation.

For SM Supermalls, the impact goes beyond filling vacancies. "Through our Job Fairs, we create access to jobs, skills, and brighter futures. Every applicant hired and every opportunity created reflects our commitment to helping Filipinos move forward," SM Executive Vice President Joaquin San Agustin shared.

More Than a Job Fair

The Independence Day Job Fairs are designed as a one-stop employment hub. Beyond job opportunities, applicants can access government support services from NBI, SSS, PhilHealth, Pag-IBIG, DOLE and PESO offices, and other partner agencies, helping streamline employment requirements and make the application process faster and more convenient.

Jobseekers are encouraged to bring multiple copies of their resume, valid IDs, a ballpen, and relevant credentials. Many participating employers will conduct on-the-spot interviews and may offer immediate hiring opportunities.

SM joined the Department of Energy (DOE) in rolling out O.N.E.: Oras Natin sa Efficiency, a nationwide energy efficiency movement that calls on Filipinos to turn awareness into action through simple, collective energy-saving habits.

Launched through a ceremonial switch-off event at the Mall of Asia Globe, the campaign champions the importance of responsible energy use amid the country’s State of National Energy Emergency, declared under Executive Order No. 110, s. 2026, which cites geopolitical tensions and supply disruptions as critical threats to national energy security.

The O.N.E. campaign, anchored on the message “One Hour, One Energy, One Nation,” encourages coordinated energy reduction as a shared national habit. For SM, this means participating in anenergy reduction window where participating properties will switch off non-essential lights and reduce unnecessary energy use.

During the ceremony, SM expressed its support for DOE’s call for energy responsibility, emphasizing that energy security is a shared concern that affects homes, businesses, communities, and the daily lives of millions of Filipinos.

“At first, one hour may seem small. One switch turned off. One appliance unplugged. One light dimmed. But when many people do it together, across homes, malls, offices, and communities, that one hour becomes something bigger. It becomes a shared habit. It becomes a national effort. It becomes a reminder that each of us has a role to play in protecting our country’s energy future,” said Junias M. Eusebio, Vice President for Operations, SM Supermalls.

As part of its operational commitment, SM will assign energy officers to monitor participation and report actual energy savings to the DOE. The initiative will also include the switch-off of non-essential lights such as pylons, façade lighting, and decorative displays during the designated reduction window, supported by proper coordination and monitoring across participating properties.

Beyond the ceremonial switch-off, SM emphasized that the campaign is about building lasting habits. Through its nationwide network of most-loved malls, SM will continue to share DOE-provided energy efficiency tips and information materials with tenants, employees, customers, and millions of daily visitors—encouraging them to carry the practice beyond the mall and into their homes and workplaces.

“It is not just about one hour. It is about what that one hour teaches us. That energy efficiency can be practical. That sustainability can be part of everyday life. That small habits, when shared by many, can help move a nation forward,” Tan added. The O.N.E. campaign also aligns with SM Cares’ long-term environmental advocacy and the broader SM Green Movement, which promotes responsible energy use, climate action, and everyday sustainability practices. SM continues to strengthen its sustainability efforts through energy-efficient operations, solar initiatives, and EV charging efforts across its properties.

Through its support for DOE’s O.N.E. campaign, SM reinforces the role of the private sector in helping strengthen national energy responsibility—showing that even the smallest actions, when done together and repeated consistently, can create meaningful impact. ==== Together, one hour can count for one nation.

SM Supermalls’ quest to create a more sustainable, greener planet began in the 1990s with the installation of a wastewater treatment plant at SM Southmall. The pioneering initiative, which recycles wastewater for irrigation and sanitary systems, laid the foundation for the company’s long-standing drive toward environmental stewardship and resource conservation.

The man behind the concept was Mr. Hans Sy, the current Chairman of the Executive Committee of SM Prime Holdings. Apart from his business acumen, Mr. Sy is regarded within the community as a champion of environmental sustainability, believing that business growth and environmental responsibility should go hand in hand.

Mr. Sy’s groundbreaking vision has been deeply ingrained in how SM Supermalls are designed and managed. Over the years, the institution has launched industry-first programs that focus on waste management, water conservation, energy efficiency, and air quality — all of which have helped improve environmental conditions and the quality of life in surrounding communities.

SM Supermalls’ enduring commitment to sustainability was already in motion before the Securities and Exchange Commission’s mandate for publicly listed companies and large non-listed entities to submit sustainability disclosures, effective in fiscal year 2026.

Its water conservation efforts have recycled approximately 6.6 million cubic meters of wastewater — equivalent to almost 3,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools — across its malls annually. In SM Baguio specifically, over 19,000 cubic meters of rainwater have been recycled for kitchen and operational use, benefiting adjacent communities by conserving valuable water.

Moreover, its Trash To Cash Recycling Market has collected approximately 1.5 million kilograms of recyclables every year, and has continuously encouraged patrons to visit their most-loved SM Supermall to join the movement toward waste segregation. Its energy management initiatives have seamlessly woven form and function into its SkyGardens and open spaces, which provide natural ventilation and have drastically improved air quality for its patrons.

Over the last few years, the mall operator has been leading the charge towards eco-friendly power options. It currently has an estimated 200,000 solar panels on 65 hectares of rooftops across its properties. The vast energy system powers mall operations while reducing the overall carbon footprint. The initiative has equipped SM Supermalls amid pressures to seek alternative energy sources during the energy crisis.

SM Supermalls is continuously expanding its electric-vehicle charging infrastructure to support the shift to sustainable mobility networks. It currently has 160 EV charging stations across its malls, with plans to scale up.

And as it moves forward, SM Supermalls will continue to pioneer innovative solutions that aim to create long-term positive impact for future generations. It will leverage its decades-long pledge to help shape greener, more resilient urban spaces. Sustainability will remain at the core of SM Supermalls’ vision. As it broadens its footprint across the country, so will its commitment to strengthening the well-being of nearby communities.

SM Supermalls and its valued partners successfully mounted the SM Group Job Fair at SM City Dasmariñas last May 27, bringing together aspiring applicants, employers, and career opportunities under one accessible venue.

The one-day hiring event drew strong participation from jobseekers across Cavite and nearby areas, connecting applicants to career openings from some of the country’s most recognized retail and service brands. Participating employers included Ace Hardware, Watsons, SM Store, SM Supermarket, SM Appliance Center, Sports Central, Toy Kingdom, Savemore, Alfamart, Goldilocks, National University, and many more under the SM Group.

More than 1,000 job seekers attended the event, interviewing with more than 20 companies offering opportunities across retail, operations, merchandising, customer service, finance, marketing, warehouse operations, pharmacy, and management roles. More than 140 were hired on the spot (HOTS) with several hundreds more for follow-up interviews beyond the job fair. This reflects the event’s immediate impact in helping Filipinos move closer to meaningful employment.

For many attendees, the event became more than just a job fair—it became an opportunity for a fresh start and a brighter future. One hired-on-the-spot (HOTS) applicant shared how the SM Job Fair gave them renewed hope and confidence in finding meaningful work.

“Thanks, God! Kasi natanggap din naman agad ako at hindi ako nahirapan. Anong oras palang uuwi na ako kasi tanggap na ako. And this is my first time kasi umattend ng job fair. And hindi ako na disappoint kasi napaka accommodating ng staff kamo. At saka ambabait pa,” shared Marissa Orias Urbano, hired at Toy Kingdom.

Some successful hires plan to use their income to fund their education. Marcelo P. Magboo III who was hired at SM Appliance Center shared that he stopped his college education for almost two years because of financial problems. He participated in the SM Job Fair, “napagisip-isip ko po ngayon na, bakit hindi po ako magtrabaho para makapag-aral ulit… Masaya po (na natanggap), tumaas po yung chance na makapag-aral ako ulit. Thank you SM for giving me a chance to get a job… magkakaroon na ako ng pambayad sa sarili kong pag-aaral.”

Government and institutional partners also emphasized the importance of bringing opportunities closer to communities through accessible employment platforms.

Companies also shared how SM job fairs allowed them to more easily connect with talents and fill-up their vacancies. “Sobrang nakaka-overwhelm… andaming tao. Yung mga area na meron akong vacancy dito, around Dasma, Imus, and Bacoor… super happy kasi na filled-in na. So, may mga na hired on the spot kami. Thank you so much SM Dasmariñas. Sana marami pang job fair,” shared Daniela Capistrano, Talent Acquisition Officer from Goldilocks Bakeshop Inc.

Initiatives like the SM Job Fairs help bridge jobseekers to immediate employment opportunities while making the process more accessible and community-based. Meanwhile, DICT highlighted the importance of digital readiness and future-ready learning as part of today’s evolving workforce landscape through their booths.

The initiative was made possible through strong collaboration among SM Supermalls, SM Retail, Jobstreet, PSAC Jobs, PCCI, ECOP, PHILEXPORT, PESO, LGUs, DICT, and other institutional partners committed to supporting employment generation and workforce development.

One-Stop Job Application Experience

SM Job Fairs also integrate government support services to help streamline the hiring process for applicants. Participating agencies—including the Social Security System (SSS), PhilHealth, Pag-IBIG, and other government partners—help applicants process essential employment requirements on-site, making the experience faster, easier, and more accessible.

This collaboration between government, industry, and private sector partners reflects a shared mission of helping more Filipinos move forward through employment and lifelong learning.

The successful turnout at SM City Dasmariñas also builds momentum for the upcoming nationwide Araw ng Kalayaan Job Fairs this June 12 across participating SM malls nationwide.

This year’s Independence Day Job Fairs will go beyond traditional hiring by integrating digital upskilling and future-ready learning opportunities in partnership with DICT, TESDA, Jobstreet, and local government partners. Main event activities will be highlighted at SM City East Ortigas, featuring digital upskilling sessions and participation from Pasig City local government and various institutional partners.

The Bulawan Trade Fair is officially in full swing at SM City Bacolod, drawing shoppers, creatives, and supporters of local craftsmanship into a vibrant showcase of Negrense artistry, innovation, and entrepreneurship. Following a successful opening day turnout, the three-day fair continues to spotlight proudly local products and meaningful stories from MSMEs across Negros Occidental — proving why this event deserves a spot on everyone’s weekend plans.

Organized in partnership with the Association of Negros Producers (ANP), the same organization behind the highly successful Negros Trade Fair at SM Aura last year, the Bulawan Trade Fair serves as both a celebration of creativity and a gateway for MSMEs to connect with wider national opportunities through SM Supermalls’ expansive retail network.

Here are five reasons why shoppers are loving the Bulawan Trade Fair at SM Bacolod:

1. It’s where Negrense craftsmanship meets modern innovation Shoppers are especially flocking to the fair for highly sought-after Negrense delicacies, handcrafted home décor, artisanal fashion accessories, woven products, natural crafts, and locally made food favorites that showcase the distinct creativity and craftsmanship of Negros Occidental.

Proudly Negrense delicacies, artisanal creations, and handcrafted products take center stage at the Bulawan Trade Fair, showcasing the innovation and creativity of local MSMEs.

Visitors can also discover original and never-before-seen product concepts featured in SIBOL: The 33rd Bulawan Awards, 4th Pilak Awards, and 3rd ANP-PGNO Balik Salig Design Competition—a prestigious platform where new products and creative concepts are introduced, judged, and recognized for excellence and innovation.

“People now appreciate products with authentic stories and craftsmanship,” shared Eva Si of ChiEvs Stones and Crystals. “The Bulawan Trade Fair allows us to proudly showcase Negrense creativity to more customers and new markets.”products and creative concepts are introduced, judged, and recognized for excellence and innovation.

2. It’s a major boost for local and next generation Filipino MSMEs

As part of SM Supermalls’ continuing SM for MSMEs advocacy, the event provides entrepreneurs with greater visibility, stronger customer engagement, and opportunities to scale beyond their local communities. “SM Supermalls continues to open meaningful opportunities for MSMEs across the country,” said Joaquin San Agustin. “Through events like the Bulawan Trade Fair, we help local businesses connect with more customers, strengthen their brands, and become part of a larger movement that champions Filipino entrepreneurship.”

3. It’s where future Negrense brands are discovered SIBOL: The 33rd Bulawan Awards, 4th Pilak Awards, and 3rd ANP-PGNO Balik Salig Design Competition serves as a preview leading toward the milestone 40th Negros Trade Fair happening later this year in Manila. The competitions introduce new products and concepts to the market, where entries are judged based on innovation, craftsmanship, and design excellence before potentially being launched commercially after the judging on May 29.

Winning products often gain wider exposure through the Negros Trade Fair, including previous standouts such as Chorizo Hamonado and Recado in Chili Oil, which eventually became part of the Manila showcase.

The Bulawan Awards recognize products from ANP members and, this year, also welcome non-ANP participants under an Open Category—expanding opportunities for emerging entrepreneurs and creators across Negros Occidental.

Meanwhile, the Pilak Awards highlight products developed by MSMEs supported by the Negros Occidental Technology and Livelihood Development Center (TLDC) under the Provincial Government of Negros Occidental, which empowers MSMEs, farmers, and marginalized communities through livelihood development, skills training, and enterprise support.

The ANP-PGNO Balik Salig Design Competition shines a spotlight on former conflict area communities, using creativity and weaving as tools for empowerment, peace-building, and sustainable livelihood generation. Through handcrafted products and cultural storytelling, participating communities showcase resilience, heritage, and hope.

For over four decades, ANP has championed Negrense entrepreneurship, design innovation, and craftsmanship by creating platforms that help local businesses grow and thrive. “The overwhelming support during opening day reflects the growing appreciation for proudly local products and Negrense talent,” shared Mary Ann Colmenares, 40th Negros Trade Fair Chairperson. “Through our partnership with SM Supermalls, we are able to give our artisans and MSMEs a stronger platform to reach wider audiences.”

4. Visitors can experience more than just shopping Beyond the exhibits, guests can immerse themselves in a dynamic lineup of creative workshops, industry meetups, talks, runway presentations, and live product judging sessions that celebrate the intersection of culture, creativity, sustainability, and entrepreneurship.

Among the activities happening throughout the fair are macrame workshops, women-led art sessions, design talks, and fashion presentations featuring local arts and crafts. “It’s inspiring to see people not just buying products but also wanting to learn the stories and processes behind them,” shared CJ Jimenez of Vaca Japonesa. “That connection makes events like this very meaningful for makers like us.”

5. Every purchase supports local communities Every handcrafted product purchased at the fair directly supports local artisans, community-based enterprises, and livelihood programs across Negros Occidental. The event also features products from communities supported through the Balik Salig Awards, a collaborative initiative that empowers former conflict-affected communities through weaving, craftsmanship, and sustainable livelihoods.

By supporting local makers, shoppers become part of a larger movement that helps preserve culture, uplift communities, and strengthen Filipino entrepreneurship. The Bulawan Trade Fair and SIBOL Design Competition at SM City Bacolod continue to celebrate Negrense creativity, entrepreneurship, and community empowerment—while opening doors for local MSMEs to grow from regional artisans into nationally recognized brands.

SM Supermalls, in partnership with the City Government of San Pedro and key national government agencies, officially inaugurated the Government Service Express (GSE) at SM Center San Pedro on May 25, 2026—further expanding access to essential public services through a convenient, one-stop hub within the mall.

The newly opened GSE marks the 19th Government Service Express in SM malls nationwide, reinforcing SM Supermalls’ continued commitment to transforming malls into community hubs that go beyond retail—spaces where everyday needs, essential services, and meaningful experiences come together.

The opening was attended by SM Supermalls representatives, local government officials, and partner agencies, marking another milestone in strengthening public-private collaboration and improving access to government services for the community.

Designed as a centralized one-stop hub, the Government Service Express allows customers to complete multiple government transactions more efficiently in one location—supporting workers securing employment requirements, entrepreneurs processing permits and clearances, families managing civil documents, and residents accessing healthcare and social protection services.

Beyond Convenience: Supporting the Everyday Needs of Working Communities

More than accessibility, the Government Service Express plays a meaningful role in supporting the daily realities of Filipino workers and families. By integrating agencies like the Business Permits and Licensing Office (BPLO), Local Government Unit (LGU), Philippine National Police (PNP), Local Civil Registry Office and National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) within the mall environment, GSE allows individuals to:

  • Process employment and documentation requirements including postal ID, without disrupting work schedules
  • Access healthcare and social security services more efficiently
  • Secure clearance including fire safety permits and benefits needed for career and livelihood opportunities
With these government agencies present, communities also gain access to health-related services and programs, contributing to improved well-being while reducing the time and cost typically associated with multiple government visits. Functioning as a modern-day community service hub, GSE complements local government efforts by providing a more accessible, organized, and customer-friendly environment—particularly valuable for urban and working populations who prioritize efficiency and reliability.

Rather than serving as a space for one-time assistance, the SM Government Service Express empowers individuals to move forward—whether through employment, healthcare access, or financial security programs, now all in one place.

The expansion of GSE to SM Center San Pedro highlights the continued strength of public-private collaboration in improving service delivery. By bringing government agencies closer to the communities they serve, SM Supermalls helps reduce barriers and create more inclusive access to essential services. Through initiatives like the Government Service Express, SM Supermalls continues to strengthen its role as the most loved mall—building spaces that serve not just transactions, but people and communities.

Amid the current energy state of emergency and as demand for electricity rises during the summer months, SM Supermalls reinforces its energy efficiency practices to serve its customers and surrounding communities undisrupted, on top of sustaining its operations.

SM Group operates the country’s largest rooftop solar panel network nationwide among property developers. Its investment in renewable energy started in 2014 with the very first installation of solar panels in SM North EDSA—long before government mandates on sustainability and the current pressures on alternative sources of power amid the energy crisis. With over 200,000 panels installed across 59 mall properties, covering 65 hectares, this expansive system powers SM’s most-loved malls through a hybrid energy strategy, helping them run more efficiently and sustainably.

Impact to Communities

Collectively, these panels generate 106 MWp of solar power, meeting over 50% of the mall operator’s electricity needs and helping ensure stable operations—from lighting to elevators. By integrating solar energy, SM reduces costs, improves efficiency, and delivers a more reliable, comfortable experience for tenants and shoppers. This hybrid energy strategy, paired with its adjusted mall operating hours reduces SM’s reliance on the national grid, helping ease pressure on the overall energy supply and free up capacity for households, schools, hospitals, offices, and essential services, in its surrounding communities particularly during peak hours.

SM’s reinforced energy efficiency thrust amid the energy crisis is its latest effort in pursuit of transformative sustainability, action that results in impactful, tangible value to customers and its surrounding communities.

SM Supermalls continues to bring purpose-driven initiatives to the global stage after earning two Silver Awards at the prestigious ICSC MAXI Awards, one of the world’s most respected recognitions for excellence in marketing and innovation in the retail and shopping industry.

The ICSC MAXI Awards recognized “Art From All: Turning Community Action into Public Art” and “The SM Green Movement: Sustaining Communities Through Responsible Design.”

SM Supermalls’ Art From All initiative was recognized for transforming sustainability into an immersive and participatory mall experience.

Launched in May 2025, the initiative invited shoppers to donate plastic waste and witness it transformed into large-scale cultural art installations inside the mall. Instead of simply raising awareness, Art From All made sustainability interactive and visible by integrating the experience directly into everyday mall foot traffic.

The initiative encouraged communities to actively engage in environmental action while showcasing how creativity and collaboration can breathe new life into discarded materials.

Meanwhile, SM Green Movement earned global recognition for its long-running sustainability framework focused on reducing the environmental impact of large-scale mall operations.

Designed to address growing pressures on water, energy, and waste systems in fast-growing urban communities, the initiative continues to scale sustainability programs across SM Supermalls properties while encouraging greater environmental awareness among the public.

Presented by the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC), the MAXI Awards celebrate outstanding campaigns and programs from shopping centers and retail brands worldwide that create meaningful impact on communities, culture, and business.

More than celebrating marketing excellence, the recognition reflects SM Supermalls’ continued commitment to enriching everyday experiences, whether through championing Filipino creativity, fostering meaningful connections, or encouraging sustainable living.

Since the energy crisis, many Filipinos have been exploring alternative modes of transport and rediscovering the benefits of cycling—whether for daily commutes, quick errands, or weekend leisure rides. All for cyclists across the country, SM is making it sustainable to choose two wheels over four at their most-loved SM Supermalls.

Designed with convenience in mind, many SM malls offer bike-friendly infrastructure and facilities that support riders who prefer a greener way to travel. From safe, dedicated bike lanes and accessible bike parking areas to convenient entrances and cyclist-friendly amenities, SM continues to welcome riders who want to make cycling part of their everyday routine.

“At SM Supermalls, cyclists can also easily stop by to park their bikes, enjoy a meal, run errands, or meet friends before heading back on the road. Whether it’s a quick stop during a weekday commute or a longer visit during a weekend ride, SM malls provide a convenient hub for riders looking to recharge and relax,” Mina Kahn, SM Division Head and Assistant Vice President for Transportation Management. “All SM malls are equipped with bike facilities both indoor and outdoor, with a total of 823 bike parking areas and over 6,400 slots. There is also a total of 92 bike repair stations available across all SM locations, in case of assistance needed.”

Empowering Biking Communities

For commuters, cycling can be both a practical and low-cost solution to navigating traffic. It promotes a healthier lifestyle while reducing carbon emissions—making it a sustainable choice for urban mobility.

That is why on top of in-mall features and facilities for cyclists, SM Supermalls also hosts biking activities that further encourage and empower cycling communities while serving as platforms for connection and engagement.

To celebrate World Bicycle Day, SM Supermalls will organize its annual Pedal Power event on June 6 across its nationwide network of most-loved Supermalls. The cycling event assembles and supports cycling communities through community bike rides and bike clinics that aim to build camaraderie and deeper appreciation for active mobility. This year, The Podium will also be hosting a special cycling learning activity through SM Cares’ Book Nook.

As part of the SM Green Movement, SM continues to champion active mobility in support of its broader commitment to building spaces that are accessible, sustainable, empowering, and inclusive for the communities it serves. Through SM Pedal Power, participating malls across the country are helping make everyday mobility more sustainable and community friendly. These include SM City Marikina, SM City Masinag, SM City San Mateo, SM Center Antipolo Downtown, SM City San Lazaro, SM City Clark, SM City Olongapo Central, SM City Rosario, SM City Lucena, SM Seaside City Cebu, and The Podium.

SM Prime Holdings, Inc. (SM Prime) has advanced resource stewardship through water circularity initiatives, implementing water conservation measures across its nationwide network of SM Supermalls since the late 1990s.

Embedded in its operations, SM Malls uses innovative water management systems that save water and reduce wastage - drawing less from the national water grid and creating value in an increasingly volatile time.

Macro to Micro: SM’s approach to water conservation

Against the looming possibility of an extended drought caused by El Niño, saving every drop of water finds greater importance for SM Supermalls. Designed with sustainability in mind, SM Malls use innovative water management systems that not only promote saving water from wastage but also significantly reduce consumption. This helps lessen the use of fresh water resources from national water systems and leave more water for its surrounding communities to use.

SM ensures sustainable water use through advanced recycling and rainwater harvesting systems. In 2025, sewage treatment plants in its 89 malls recycle an estimated 6.6 million cubic meters of property wastewater for non-potable use. The rainwater treatment facility in SM Baguio innovatively harvests and treats rainwater collected during the wet season and transforms it into water for kitchen and tenant use.

As a key customer touchpoint in water management, faucets also regulate the outflow of water for every use. SM’s investments in "push delay" faucets create sustainable operations to strengthen water conservation. These faucets save water by preventing it from being left running by restricting water flow through a certain window of time.

Technology then paved the way for enhanced conservation, and SM started using no-touch, sensor type faucets in 2015, far before the sanitary restrictions brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sensor type faucets help save water by automatically shutting outflow of water once the sensor does not detect a user. Additionally, these types of faucets typically require less water pressure, which also reduces water waste. Significant investments in systems such as sensor faucets also reduce wear and tear on fixtures and equipment, resulting in long-term savings and improved water conservation.

With its implementation, SM saw a 59% reduction in water waste, translating to saving the equivalent of a 1.5-liter bottle of water per user using the faucet over just 7 seconds.

By equipping its most-loved malls with water-efficient fixtures enhanced with technology, SM is protecting resources critical not just to its operations but to its surrounding communities. Under the guidance of the Water for Tomorrow pillar of the SM Green Movement, SM champions sustainable water use, reducing environmental impact and securing access to water for generations to come.

Water Resilience at Scale

SM Supermalls has unveiled the “SM Supermalls Sustainability Digest 2025: Work and Wins.” The inaugural report showcases how sustainability is woven deeply into SM’s core strategies, ensuring its nationwide network of most-loved Supermalls remain safe, resilient, and environmentally responsible for the benefit of Filipinos and the communities that surround its business.

The comprehensive report spotlights SM’s environmental efforts that stem from the sustainability pillars of energy, water, and waste. Through the digest, SM Supermalls reinforces its commitment to blending environmentally responsible practices into its operations focused on creating more resilient communities and advancing environmental management.

“What makes the sustainability approach of SM Supermalls unique is the scale in which we are able to implement our hard work. For us sustainability is not about mere compliance. It is deeply embedded in every aspect of operations across our nationwide network of most-loved Supermalls to serve our customers and communities better,” said Joaquin San Agustin, SM Supermalls Executive Vice President for Marketing.

SM Supermalls’ dedication to environmental responsibility dates back to the 90s, when Mr. Hans Sy, current Chairman of the Executive Committee of SM Prime Holdings, pioneered resource-saving initiatives, particularly by leading the installation of sewage treatment plants that recycle water for irrigation, sanitation, and air-conditioning. Today, SM’s environmental efforts continue to evolve through integrated solutions in renewable energy, water stewardship, and waste management across its mall operations nationwide.

On energy efficiency, SM Supermalls Vice-President for Mall Operations Junias M. Eusebio highlighted the company’s increased reliance on renewables to support its long-term sustainability goals. “Not all solar energy can power the whole supply. But rather, it complements the energy mix of the grid plus the solar energy we generate.” SM’s environmental programs have also expanded to involve broader customer touchpoints for deeper community engagement across the Philippines.

“Our scale gives us the unique privilege of involving our customers and communities across the country in the shared journey toward sustainability. SM not only strives to implement measures that preserve our natural resources, we also empower everyone to engage with customer touchpoints on sustainability at their most-loved SM mall,” said Liza B. Silerio, SM Supermalls Vice President for Corporate Compliance and Sustainability.

Moreover, SM Supermalls enhances community resilience against natural disasters by continuously upgrading its rainwater catchment basins, automated weather stations, and earthquake-monitoring systems. SM Supermalls has carried Mr. Sy’s vision forward by making sustainability a core part of how its malls are designed, managed, and operated.

Together with government institutions, local government units, stakeholders, and volunteers, SM Supermalls has strengthened its role in working for a cleaner, greener future for all.

Additionally, SM Prime’s Net Zero 2040 goal envisions powering malls with renewable energy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. These objectives align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals that integrate environmental action and resilience-building.
